Resetting of zircon inclusions in garnet: Implications for elastic thermobarometry

چکیده

Abstract Elastic thermobarometry of host-inclusion systems for back-calculating pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions inclusion entrapment relies on the assumption that hostinclusion rheology is purely elastic. In this study, we have explored both elastic non-elastic behavior zircon-in-garnet (ZiG) by in situ Raman spectroscopy at high T ambient P. We show upon heating, plastic relaxation takes place immediately after zircon inclusions experience tensile stress with respect to a free crystal same T. On subsequent cooling, develop new state, thus pressures been reset from those corresponding their original entrapment. Resetting therefore strongly depends exhumation P-T path. This explains why using ZiG reliable when applied low-P high-T rocks where cooling path passes quickly into compression domain inclusion. other hand, high-P exhumed along quasi-isothermal paths take they are until significant commences low ultrahigh-P commonly indicate clockwise instead

Determination of zircon/melt trace element partition coefficients from SIMS analysis of melt inclusions in zircon

Partition coefficients (DM) for rare earth elements (REE) (La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Dy, Er and Yb) and other trace elements (Ba, Rb, B, Sr, Ti, Y and Nb) between zircon and melt have been calculated from secondary ion mass spectrometric (SIMS) analyses of zircon/melt inclusion pairs. The melt inclusion-mineral (MIM) technique shows that DREE increase in compatibility with increasing atomic number, simil...

Elastic properties of hydrogrossular garnet and implications for water in the upper mantle

The single-crystal e astic properties of a hydrous ilicate gamet, hibschite (Ca3A12(SiO4)l.72(H404)l.28), were measured using Brillouin spectroscopic techniques. The adiabatic bulk modulus of hibschite, K s = 99.8+1.0 GPa, and the shear modulus, •t = 64.3_--/-0.5 GPa, are 40% lower than the bulk and shear moduli for anhydrous grossular gamet Ca3A12(SiO4) 3. This increased compressibility of hyd...

Minimal energy for elastic inclusions

We consider a variant of the isoperimetric problem with a nonlocal term representing elastic energy. More precisely, our aim is to analyse the optimal energy of an inclusion of fixed volume whose energy is determined by surface and elastic energy. This problem has been studied extensively in the physical/metallurgical literature; however, the analysis has mainly been either (i) numerical, or (i...

QuIB Calc: A MATLAB® script for geobarometry based on Raman spectroscopy and elastic modeling of quartz inclusions in garnet

Quartz inclusion thermobarometry utilizes the pressureand temperature-sensitive Raman peak shifts of quartz inclusions in garnet to determine formation pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. The measured Raman shift indicates the pressure currently retained in the inclusions at ambient external conditions, such that entrapment PT conditions (i.e., P and T of garnet growth) can be determined ...

Metamorphic replacement of mineral inclusions in detrital zircon from Jack Hills , Australia : Implications for the Hadean Earth

We appreciate that Rasmussen et al. (2011) have characterized a large number of inclusions in Jack Hills (Australia) detrital zircons, but we fi nd two signifi cant fl aws in their paper: one of scholarship and one of omission. With regard to the fi rst, their paper implies discovery of reset isotopic systems in phosphate inclusions in Jack Hills zircons. This was previously discussed by Caro e...
